Des Moines Real Estate Statistics 3-27-09

Week Ending March 27, 2009

This past week, the Iowa Association of REALTORS held their annual Legislative Bus-In day event.   Around 300 REALTORS attended the event from around the state including 85 from The Des Moines Area Association of REALTORS.

The event started out with a luncheon with keynote speaker John Tuccillo.  Tuccillo is one of the foremost real estate and housing finance economists in the United States.  He is also former Chief Economist for the National Association of REALTORS.

Tuccillo predicts that the current economic recession will last until late August or early September of this year with home mortgage interest rates remaining low until the first months of 2010.  Home sales will also begin to recover in the third quarter of this year and pricing will not begin to rise until the first of the new year.

During the afternoon session at the state capital, the Des Moines contingency of REALTORS met with Senator Larry Noble and Representatives Chris Hagenow and Kent Sornsen who made time to come and discuss the issues with our members.  These issues of interest include: Lead Based Paint legislation, Local Option Sales Taxes & Impact Fees, Homestead Property Taxes and Real Estate Transfer Taxes.

Des Moines Real Estate Roundup Week Ending 3-20-09

Week Ending March 20, 2009

As the first day of Spring arrives, so do new resolutions… I know, you’re saying.. “wait a minute… resolutions are for New Years”… well in my book, it’s never too late for doing something healthy.

The last couple weeks I’ve been ramping up my new resolution, “Walking”.  My wife and I along with our two dogs Katie & Willie took advantage of the nice weather and, well, one thing led to another and I’m now finding myself addicted to walking.  Alright, maybe not addicted, but certainly enthused.  Yesterday I bought a new gadget.  A high tech multifunction “Accusplit Eagle” pedometer!  Don’t ask me why they gave a device specific to walking a name with the word “Eagle” in it.

Today, I decided that I would spend my lunch half-hour out on a walk near my office.  There is a park a few blocks from RE/MAX as well as a great walking trail along Walnut Creek.  I was able to make a nice loop in the 30 minutes away.  My terrific little pedometer said that I walked just over 1 1/2 miles!  Of course, the first thing I did was to search Google for a map that allowed me to measure distance… Here’s what I found: http://www.fosc.org/FindDistance.htm   The map defaults to Silver Spring, Maryland, but you can zoom out and re-select your own state, city and neighborhood.   I measured the distance and Accusplit Eagle was RIGHT!  1.64 miles!

The trail we walk at home each night measures out to just under 1 1/2 miles, so Today – The First Official Day of Spring – I walked over 3 miles and over 10,000 steps. (10,569 to be exact)

Even though we had record temperatures in the 70’s this week, there is still a layer of ice at Waterworks Park.  Fortunately, this Canadian Goose was doing her part to flap her wings to warm the water.  The large building in the background is 801 Grand, Principal Financial Group’s flagship building and Iowa’s tallest office structure.
